Canadian Women

According to Canadian Women's Foundation (January 2013) about 21% of people living in poverty are single parent mothers.

The statistics are clear: single women and their children are facing a unique challenge, and without the proper assistance and support, the goal of achieving independence and raising a family is virtually insurmountable without making compromises that certainly affect childrens development and long term prospects for success.

Poverty resulting from abandonment affects women's quality of life in a number of important ways. It impacts the health and security of women and their families and it deprives women of the freedom to participate fully in their communities. Lack of affordable childcare also limits women’s options of paid employment. Women on their own fall into the category of the poorest members of society, particularly women raising children in single-parent homes.
